The Best Scone Recipe Ever Is From A Lord Of The Rings Fan Site

Almost 15 years ago, I found the greatest scone recipe ever on theonering.net, formerly THE source for all things LotR.  Looks like the site has laid dormant as a post- Frodo Mt. Doom since 2007, but you can still score this easy, tasty recipe for scones.

Here’s my modified version:

Aefen’s Elven Spice Scones

by Aefensteorra (and me)

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/3 cups all- purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp double-acting baking powder
  • a  2 tsp sugar
  • 6 tbs salted butter
  • 5 tbs milk, cream or half- and- half
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • grated orange peel
  • allspice
  • Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, or other mix- in (optional)

Heat the oven to 450 F. Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar into a bowl. (Or just dump em in there and mix with a whisk or fork).  Add spices to taste – a very liberal dose of each, especially of the cinnamon. You know you’ve got enough spices when you can SEE them all.

Melt the butter in the microwave.  Add milk & vanilla.  Whisk in egg.

Combine the wet & dry ingredients.  Add your mix- in, if using.  The dough should stick together easily but come off the sides of the bowl.  If you dough is too wet, add more flour.  If your dough is too dry, add more milk.

Prep your pan:  Grease a cookie sheet.  Throw a piece of parchment paper over the grease.  Make medium-sized balls of dough with your fingers. Arrange on cookie sheet.

Bake for 10 minutes, or until they seem slightly golden around the edges and done. Serve hot with tea.

Here’s a screenshot of the original recipe:
