Always find the source. The Taylor Swift/ Scooter Braun beef began on Taylor’s Tumblr.
From this Tumblr post, I made the following conclusions:
- Taylor played the victim card again- and it worked.
- Taylor wants you to buy her new album “Lover”.
- Taylor Swift still has a Tumblr (!!!!).
I’m going to break it down. Blue means Taylor’s post.
For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in.
I’m not sure why she didn’t do this. She could have just produced a bunch of crap albums, like Prince did when he wanted to get out of his contract with Warner Bros. Prince did eventually get back all his master recordings.
I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums.
I really feel for this music she wrote on her bedroom floor and these videos she paid for using the money she earned playing in bars. Stadiums? Not so much.
Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years.
Most sources have asserted that Taylor did have some advance notice about the deal. This sounds like the time Taylor was “totally shocked” at Kanye’s using her name in “Famous”; later we saw video footage revealing she OK’d the whole thing. Also, here we have TaySway officially dropping the B word: bullying.
Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it.
So, the beef here isn’t that Taylor lied to her fans, but that Kim “illegally recorded” the conversation. Also: is everything we send on Snapchat an “illegally recorded snippet”? You’re just sour because you got caught in your own lie, Taylor.
Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked.
Here, Taylor refers to Kanye’s “Famous” video. If Kanye indeed made this video with Taylor’s permission, I see where Taylor would feel violated. However, let’s examine the words “revenge porn video which strips my body naked”. Are you picturing Kanye ripping Taylor Swift’s clothes off? Because I was, and I’m sure that’s the kind of violent image she wants to conjure. The video shows all the people Kanye West is in bed with- Donald Trump, Kim Kardashian, Amber Rose, Rihanna, and, yup, Taylor Swift. In the video, all these people lie in a bed naked, asleep. Nobody moves. This was all the proof I needed to deduce that Kanye and Taylor’s entire beef is a publicity stunt. At least Kanye can be a little tongue in cheek about it. Nothing about the video says “revenge porn” to me. The video puts Taylor and Kanye on the same side.
Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.
Here, I’m reading, “I totally could have afforded my masters.” In “about to lie” I hear the deal is not final and Taylor still might end up with her life’s work.
This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it.
Yes!! Bash the men! Men are bad!! Fifteen year old girls are innocent! Forget that both Taylor’s savvy upper- class parents went over her contracts with a fine- toothed comb. The Swifts once owned a big portion of Big Machine. Taylor basically built Big Machine and she got a pretty sweet deal from them. Taylor should own her original work- so should every artist.
When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.
Here’s the part where Taylor Swift cries in front of her label head. That sounds pretty unprofessional to me, but I became aware from Sam Jay’s comedy bit that Crying White Girl is totally a negotiation tactic. “Controlling a woman” vilifies men; again, this sounds like language strategically picked to align women with Taylor.
Thankfully, I am now signed to a label that believes I should own anything I create. Thankfully, I left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make.
I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, Lover will be out August 23.
And here’s the thesis: “Buy my record, stop listening to my back catalog, support me, not Scooter Braun”. Everything this girl does has an economic angle. She knows her past work kicks her current work’s butt. She’ll never be fifteen and innocent again. That music spoke to people. Taylor’s new music makes money. And by the way, guys, she’s 30.
Sad and grossed out,
In beefs, people pick sides. To me, it looks like Taylor Swift, Scott Borchetta, Scooter Braun, Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are all on the same side. They’re all in bed together. There’s no such thing as bad publicity. Taylor learned what works for her brand, and it wasn’t glittery snakes or a bad- girl image- it’s the sweet, innocent, kitten- loving white girl getting bullied by “incessant, manipulative” black men and businessmen. Buy it if you want. I’m not.
