I know suggesting another lead actor for 2018’s Queen movie (the band, not the monarch) seems sacrilegious. Rami Malek won an Oscar for his portrayal of Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury.
But I couldn’t help but wonder… why isn’t anyone talking about Mika?
The pop artist drew early comparisons to Mercury for his legendary vocal range. He has relationships with Brian May and Roger Taylor. He wrote a song empathizing with Freddie called “Last Party”. Mika has Lebanese roots and sexual fluidity. His 2007 hit “Grace Kelly” includes the line “so I tried a little Freddie”, as in the Queen frontman.
In addition, Mika can actually sing and play the piano. Actor Rami Malek says his voice in the film is “probably 90% Mercury.” Every time an actor gets so much praise for playing a singer and not actually, singing, I have more and more respect for Joaquin Phoenix, who sang as Johnny Cash in Walk The Line and lost the Oscar. Jamie Foxx won an Oscar for lip- syncing as Ray Charles in Ray the previous year.
Yet, as far as I can tell, nobody tapped Mika to play Freddie. Most searches mention Sacha Baron Cohen skipped the role, but no word on Mika.
I think Mika is an incredibly brave artist. I’m cool with Rami Malek, but I’d love to see an artist like Mika get the praise Malek is getting for Bohemian Rhapsody.
