Wonderful Wonderful: The Killers Album We Need + Tour Dates + Streaming Links

2017 | Island Records| 54 minutes (Deluxe Edition)

On Wonderful Wonderful‘s opening and title track, lead singer Brandon Flowers drones about droughts and motherless children.  We will not have mindless synth beats this time around.

It’s 2018.  This is no time to be cute:  it’s time to say something.  And The Killers say a lot.

The Killers have had a wild ride.  They burst onto the scene with 2004’s Hot Fuss, a murder- fueled indie- rock explosion.  They followed Hot Fuss with the decidedly gritter Sam’s Town, then did the glam- rock thing again on 2008’s Day & Age.  They fell off the radar for a while.  Brandon Flowers put out some solo stuff.  They released one Christmas song a year from 2011-2016, all benefiting Project RED.  In 2012, they released Battle Born, an introspective record about the trials and tribulations of family life.  On Wonderful Wonderful, they examine themes of Man vs. World.

On “The Man”, their best single in years, they gently mock society’s idea of masculinity.  They might not admit “Run For Cover”‘s Trump influences, but it undeniably tackles political corruption: Flowers wrote the first verse about a sex scandal involving a senator from Nevada.  “Tyson Vs. Douglas” pinpoints the moment when you feel the media- and the world- lied to you.  “Some Kind of Love” draws from Flowers’ wife’s PTSD; their children sing at the end (I find this creepy, but I guess it’s kind of sweet).  “The Calling” begins with Woody Harrelson reading a Bible verse about Jesus coming to deliver the unrighteous, then follows with a terrifying tale of a really bad dad, and hope for his redemption.  Even the cover gives us something to think about:  the desert used to be an ocean!  The penultimate song dares to ask “Have all the songs been written?  Has all the gas been siphoned?”  Not yet, Killers.  Not yet.

All these messages go down easy, thanks to catchy hooks and sick guitar riffs.  The Killers still make rock, after all, and they do rock– see a show on their current tour for proof.  Five records in, the Killers have a sound defined by synths, drama, the desert, and Flowers’ signature drawl.  I hope, someday, The Killers achieve legend status.   Their popularity abroad says more about Americans than it does about The Killers.  They’ve never had a number one hit or a Grammy nomination.  Are Americans really so averse to smart, political pop music?  We shouldn’t be.

Wonderful Wonderful feels thought- out, deliberate and adult.  Listen to it if you have half a brain and aren’t afraid to use it.

Best Tracks:  The Man, Run for Cover, Tyson vs Douglas, Some Kind of Love, The Calling, Money on Straight
