Guess why Taylor Swift wins so many Grammys?

Hint:  It might have nothing to do with her music.  It’s because she’s an evil genius.

The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences gives out Grammys, named for the Gramophone- shaped trophy, around February every year. But the nominations can be songs we haven’t heard for months.  That’s because the Grammys’ eligibility year is October – September of the previous year.  For example, this year’s Grammys will award material released October 1st 2013- September 30 2014.  Next year’s Grammys will award material released October 1st 2014- September 30 2015.  The 57th Grammy award nominations were announced on December 5, 2014.

And if you’re wondering why Taylor Swift’s 1989 wasn’t nominated, it’s because Taylor released her album on October 27th, 27 days after the deadline- thereby making it eligible for the 58th Grammy Awards, which will take place in 2016.

Evil genius Taylor Swift has figured out how to work the Grammy system so her albums have a full year to gain momentum before they’re eligible for Grammy awards.  Taylor released “Shake It Off” in August, and the song got nods for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance-but all her other releases came later.  That’s a full year of singles, publicity, and, yes, campaigning.  And campaigning matters.

Let’s take a look back at Taylor’s crafty master plan, shall we?

Granted, Taylor Swift works hard on her albums and songs.  And of course, she’s not the only one releasing albums in October to get awards more than a year later.

But still.  Evil genius.
