Jack White: Lazaretto Review & Tour Dates

Jack White | Lazaretto | 2014 | 39 minutes | Third Man Records

Jack White has gotten press lately because he said the Black Keys ripped off the White Stripes, but then apologized in support of two- pieces everywhere. He’s since been promoting the pants off his 2nd solo album, which came almost exactly a month after The Black keys released their album “Turn Blue”. Go figure.

But if you think The Black Keys ripped off The White Stripes, their latest albums’ sounds should prove both acts are past that. “Turn Blue” douses the Black Keys’ staple blues/ rock with a heavier dose of blues, where “Lazaretto” travels down a country road.

Lazaretto has influences of blues, rock, country, ragtime, hip- hop and opera. White said writings by his 19- year- old self inspired Lazaretto. White might have co- written the album with his 19-year-old self, but the album resurrects White’s first solo efforts as well.  Ten years ago, White started working on his own projects in addition to The White Stripes. He dove straight into country music.  Lazaretto (Italian for lepers’ hospital) sounds reminiscent of White’s work on Loretta Lynn’s album Van Lear Rose and the Cold Mountain soundtrack in 2003 and 2004.

Blunderbuss raged with screeching riffs and scathing lyrics; Lazaretto chills out with fiddles and ragtime piano. Lillie Mae Rische, Ruby Amanfu and Olivia Jean (pictured from left) lend backing vocals to tracks like “Temporary Ground”, “Alone In My Home”, and “Would You Fight For My Love”. White keeps finding creative ways to adapt old- school styles in new- school ways, like on “Three Women”, a version of Blind Willie McTell’s “Three Women Blues”.

The fact that White opens with a cover says a lot. Jack White knows his shit when it comes to music. He’s a bona fide musician with a deep appreciation for music’s roots, yet he finds ways to create his own style without explicitly “ripping off” anything else.   Jack White has become his own genre. Whether he likes it or not, he’s bound to influence the rest of the music world sooner or later.

The “Ultra LP” features more gimmicks than a circus sideshow. The record has zero compression, two intros for “Just One Drink” depending on where you drop the needle and the end of both sides play in a loop. You also get bonus tracks and a hologram of some angels etched onto the vinyl. It’s $20 from Third Man’s Web site.
